Once again, these are low quality scans of initial prints, so the colour and focus is a little off in some cases.
Here are the images I am happy with and will potentially make it to the final edit, and also those that I like, but may need some adjustments before I would be happy to use them in my final submission. The images on the left are ones that I will almost definitely use, and the ones on the right are those that I may need to think about re-shooting.
I wanted to make sure I included some images that were quite simply composed to contrast against the images that are full of details. I feel that the repetition of the lines of steps and pile of hangers alongside the very simple composition makes this image well balanced.
I may need to look at re-shooting this image. I am happy with the subject matter, but the line along the top should have been either all included in order to match the frame of the image to the window frame, or totally omitted. I think it would be stronger if I had done the former.
Again, here I like the repetition of the chairs, and the angles that the legs of both of them are creating. To me, the way the children's chair has been discarded represents the way that the children of the family have grown out of childhood toys.
This image may need a slight crop on the left hand side of the frame in order to match the way that the shelf is cut off on the right hand side. Other than that, and once I have printed it with proper colour balance, I think this image could also be strong at contrasting with the more busy images in the series.
Here I tried to return to my original aim of photographing my subjects head on, and the lines that it creates in this image allows it not to feel overwhelmed by the amount of detail on the desk itself.
I feel that this is probably my most successful image from this shoot, and pretty much sums up what i am trying to say with the series. The way the books have had to be stacked in such a way as to fit underneath the slant of the roof shows how our family have used the space in the house in the best way we possibly can, and how it has had to adjust to fit our possessions. There is a slight blue/green tint to this image that I will hopefully be able to fix at the printing stage.
This is another example of how the childhood items we own no longer have much use. Again, the simple composition will hopefully work against the busier image sin the series.
I wanted to photograph this subject, purely because of the juxtaposition between the antique piece of furniture and the temporary cardboard storage boxes stacked on top. Although I like the subject matter, I'm not sure about the composition. There are details around the edge of the frame that needn't be there, and are a bit of a distraction. I may need to re-shoot this.
I feel that the repetition of straight lines in this image gives it a strong composition. However, I'm not sure, when viewed on its own, whether it gives the right message about the house. It almost looks as though it is quite empty, and I need to think about whether it will enhance my project or actually impede it's message.
I feel that this image is a good representation of the fact that, in this family, we are far too busy to garden. I also like that it references another one of the images, with the swings in the background. It gives the images a bit of context, and helps to build up a bigger picture of the house.
I feel that this image is strong, the lines of the paving lead the eye through the photograph. But this might be one too many pictures of the garden for the amount of images in the series. I will have to also keep an eye on how the tones of all the final images work together as a whole, making sure that they are all relatively consistent.
I wanted to make sure I included an image of my bedroom, because I was aiming to have at least one photograph of every room in the house. Although I like the amount of detail in the frame, I'm not sure if the composition works. The lighting is exactly what I am aiming for however.
Again, I feel that the vertical line of the edge of the shed on the right hand side of the frame give the image a strong composition. This is another shot where I tried to include as much detail as possible by shooting with a small aperture. I really think that this image will work well within the series.
The next stage for me is to print all the images I think I will be using in the final submission in the darkroom, making sure that I keep the colour balance right. I will also print those images that I am not quite sure about yet, so that I can lay all the images out in a grid and start to see how the series works together. If it turns out that I can improve them when I print them myself then I may not have to re-shoot them. I am aiming to have about 20 final images to submit and exhibit.
